From the top of the Monte da Lua Hill, two marvellous castles look over the old town of Sintra: the Pena National Palace and the Moorish Castle. Sintra is located 30 Km west of Lisbon, 40 minutes by train. On the map is marked: Pena National Palace - Definitely the first place to visit in Sintra, the Pena National Palace (Palacio da Pena) is one of the best expressions of 19th century European Romantic architecture in Portugal. Ferdinand II turned a ruined monastery into a marvellous coloured castle. The Pena Palace belongs to UNESCO World Heritage List. On the map is marked: Park of Pena - Garden - The Pena National Palace (Palacio da Pena) was built on the top of the hill Monte da Lua and is surrounded by a big green park with huge gardens, trees, fountains, coloured flowers and lakes with swan. On the map is marked: Moorish Castle - The Moorish Castle or Castle of Sintra was built by the Moors (Muslims), probably in the 9th century. When the Muslims retreated to the south, the Castle was abandoned. The ruins of the Moorish Castle are recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the map is marked: National Palace - The Sintra National Palace (Palacio Nacional de Sintra) is located in the middle of the town of Sintra. The National Palace is the well-preserved mediaeval Royal Palace in Portugal. On the map is marked: Quinta da Regaleira - The Regaleira Palace (Palacio da Regaleira) or the Quinta da Regaleira is also known as the Palace of Monteiro the Millionaire. It was designed by Carvalho Monteiro and the architect Luigi Manini. On the map is marked: Regaleira`s Gardens - The park with the palace, gardens, lakes, mystic caves, dark tunnels and enigmatic buildings is probably related with Masonry and the Knights Templars. On the map is marked: Regaleira`s Wells - Walking through the Regaleira’s wood you will discover 2 deep wells. Spiral stairways inside the wells lead till the bottom, where secret and dark tunnels begin. You couldn’t find these tunnels on the map, and following inside the tunnels is completely dark, so try to use a lighter or the flash of your camera and discover where they lead. This easy adventure is funny, and not dangerous.
